CONVERSATIONS ON freedom, creativity, and the transformative power of storytelling dominate the Aké Arts and Books Festival.
The annual event brings together writers, artists, and creatives across Africa, creating a platform that fosters cultural exchange and amplifies African voices globally.
Sterling Bank has played a pivotal role in sustaining the festival, marking its eighth consecutive year as a headline sponsor.
The bank’s unwavering support ensures the festival remains a vital space for nurturing creativity and celebrating Africa’s heritage.
Opening this year’s edition with the theme “Finding Freedom,” Lola Shoneyin, the festival’s director, delivered a notable speech addressing global disillusionment.
She highlighted the failures of systems meant to uplift society and underscored the need for storytelling as a medium for hope and reimagination.
“Through creativity—art, literature, and music—we can spark hope and reimagine what’s possible,” she said, drawing applause from a captivated audience.
The festival’s rich lineup includes book discussions, film screenings, poetry sessions, music performances, and thought-provoking panels.
Each activity celebrates African stories while creating a dialogue around pressing global issues.
Sterling Bank’s Chief Marketing Officer, Maurice Igugu, explained the bank’s commitment to Aké during a press briefing.
“Platforms like Aké preserve culture and inspire creativity. Supporting this festival isn’t just about backing an event—it’s about investing in Africa’s future,” he said.
He emphasized Sterling’s role in encouraging intellectual growth and ensuring African voices are heard on the global stage.
Under Shoneyin’s visionary leadership and Sterling’s steadfast backing, the Aké Festival thrives as a hub of inspiration.
The collaboration between creatives and institutions like Sterling demonstrates how Africa’s stories can transcend borders, enriching global understanding.
