NIGERIA’s LEADER, President Bola Tinubu, played host to German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during a significant three-day state visit to Nigeria.
The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, underscored the strengthening of diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.
President Steinmeier arrived at 11:06 a.m. to a grand reception marked by ceremonial honours, including a 21-gun salute and a review of the guard of honour mounted by Nigeria’s Brigade of Guards.
The symbolic gesture reflected the importance Nigeria places on its relationship with Germany, a key partner in trade, investment, and cultural exchange.
The visit represents the third high-level interaction between Nigeria and Germany within the year, following earlier engagements involving German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and President Tinubu.
These exchanges signal a robust commitment to deepening cooperation across various sectors, including economic reforms, technology, and cultural ties.
German President Lauds Nigeria’s Economic Reforms
During a bilateral session at the State House, President Steinmeier lauded the bold economic reforms spearheaded by President Tinubu, commending the Nigerian people for their resilience amidst challenging economic conditions.
Drawing parallels with Germany’s own experience during a past economic crisis, Steinmeier emphasised the importance of courage and perseverance in achieving national transformation.
“Germany’s journey out of a deep economic crisis required bold reforms and the resilience of its people,” he noted. “Nigeria’s efforts are being closely observed and supported by Germany.”
The German leader also pledged continued support for Nigeria’s reform agenda, highlighting Germany’s commitment to fostering economic development and addressing shared challenges.
Steinmeier’s engagements in Lagos, including interactions with cultural leaders like Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka and artist Nike Okundaye, further emphasise the breadth of cooperation beyond economic interests.
The government asserts that this visit consolidates Nigeria-Germany relations, signalling a shared vision for sustainable growth and cultural exchange.
