THE WEST African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released revised results for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) following the discovery of a technical glitch that affected the grading of serialized papers.
According to the Head of Nigeria’s Office of WAEC, Amos Dangut, the examination body had earlier announced that 38.32% of the 1,969,313 candidates who sat for the examination secured credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
However, an internal review revealed that a serialized code file was wrongly used in the printing of English Language Objective Tests, resulting in candidates being scored with wrong keys.
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Dangut explained that the Council had embarked on an innovation, paper serialization, already deployed by a national examination body.
“The Council, being an accountable, transparent, and credible organization, further investigated all the serialized papers and discovered that a serialized code file was wrongly used in the printing of English Language Objective Tests,” he said.
Dangut noted that the schools that sat for the WASSCE using the computer-based mode were not affected by the error.
“The observable decline in the performance of candidates earlier announced was partly traceable to this absurd situation,” he added.
The revised results show that 62.96% of candidates (1,239,884 out of 1,969,313) secured credits in five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Dangut said that the Council sincerely apologizes for the imbroglio and deeply regrets the emotional and mental dismay it might have caused the affected candidates and all stakeholders.
Candidates can now access their corrected results on the WAEC website www.waecdirect.org.
The Council has also assured that efforts are being made to speedily complete the processing of results for the 205,916 candidates whose results are still being processed due to some issues to be resolved.
Meanwhile, the results of 191,053 candidates are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
The Council said it will continue to sanction all cases of examination malpractice, as schools, supervisors, teachers, and candidates perpetrating this evil are not helping the educational system.
Dangut further urged candidates to check their results online and apply for their Digital certificates, which will be released 48 hours thereafter.
He also reminded schools and candidates that the results of candidates who are sponsored by States indebted to the Council will not be released until payment is made.
