EDO STATE’s newly inaugurated Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholor, has been called upon by President Bola Tinubu to make substantial strides in improving living standards and governance within the state.
Following Okpebholor’s electoral victory in the September 21, 2024, governorship race, Tinubu expressed high expectations for his leadership to restore faith in Edo’s political institutions.
Emphasizing the significance of robust governance, Tinubu urged Okpebholor to empower the state legislature and other essential government bodies.
He highlighted the importance of an independent legislative branch, underscoring that it is crucial for achieving sustainable democratic reforms and transparent governance in Edo State.
The president’s message also carried a warning against attempts to undermine this branch, referencing challenges faced during the previous administration led by Godwin Obaseki.
With Okpebholor bringing Edo back under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after eight years of opposition rule, Tinubu stressed that the new governor has a responsibility to validate the public’s trust. He encouraged Okpebholor to honor the principles of democracy by pursuing effective governance and policies that directly benefit Edo’s residents.
Tinubu praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its conduct of a smooth electoral process and urged the commission to uphold high standards in the upcoming November 16 Ondo State governorship election. The president commended Edo State’s election process as a significant chapter in Nigeria’s democratic development and congratulated the citizens of Edo on their peaceful involvement in this milestone.
The president concluded his statement by expressing his joy at seeing Edo State enter a new era of leadership, encouraging Okpebholor to set an example of dedication and transparency in governance that resonates with the people of Edo.
