THE WORLD Trade Organization (WTO) has confirmed Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria’s former finance minister, as the sole candidate for a second term as director-general.

Following the nomination period closure on November 8, the WTO’s General Council Chair, Ambassador Petter Ølberg of Norway, notified members that no other nominations were received, effectively securing Okonjo-Iweala’s continuation in the role.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who initially signaled her readiness to serve an additional four years, formally submitted her acceptance in a letter dated September 16.

On October 8, the WTO initiated the process to appoint the next director-general, granting member states until November 8 to propose nominees.

With no alternative candidates emerging, her pathway to reappointment appears clear.

Ambassador Ølberg emphasized that the upcoming procedural steps will adhere strictly to WTO’s established guidelines for director-general appointments (WT/L/509).

Okonjo-Iweala’s first term, set to end on August 31, 2025, is anticipated to extend seamlessly into a second term pending official procedural confirmation.
