Tinubu Joins African Leaders in Accra for Mahama’s Inauguration

THE UPCOMING inauguration of Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has drawn attention across the African continent.

Scheduled for Tuesday, January 7, the event will take place in Accra, with dignitaries from several nations set to attend.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria is among the leaders expected at the ceremony.

His departure for Ghana is slated for Monday, January 6.

This follows an invitation from President-elect Mahama, who had earlier visited President Tinubu in December 2024.

Mahama, who previously led Ghana as its 12th president from 2011 to 2017, regained the presidency after his December 2024 election victory.

He will take over from President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served from 2017 to 2025.

The invite indicates that President Tinubu’s presence carries additional significance, as he currently serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

His role is noted to affirm Nigeria’s pivotal position in regional stability and cooperation.

Accompanying the Nigerian leader will be Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and other senior officials.

The delegation also reflects the depth of Nigeria and Ghana’s bilateral relations, which have historically been characterised by mutual respect and cooperation.

Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to the President, Bayo Onanuga announced his participation in a statement on Sunday, January 5, noting that the long-standing personal and professional rapport between Tinubu and Mahama, mirrors the broader diplomatic ties between their nations.
