A DEVASTATING fire on Sunday evening in Agbor, Delta State, claimed at least five lives, including a young woman, and left several others hospitalised with severe injuries.

The blaze, triggered by a diesel tanker that toppled and exploded at a traffic light junction in Ika South Local Government Area, destroyed homes, businesses, and vehicles, plunging the community into grief.

Eyewitnesses reported that the tanker lost control due to brake failure, leading to an explosion that killed four people on the spot.

Three others sustained critical injuries and are receiving medical attention.

Properties worth millions of naira were consumed by the fire, leaving families displaced and businesses ruined.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the Governor described the incident as horrifying and extended heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families.

He directed the State Ministry of Health and the State Emergency Management Agency to provide urgent assistance to those affected.

He also commended the firefighters, security personnel, and residents for their swift response in putting out the inferno and aiding victims.

Aviation Minister Also Mourns

Similarly, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, expressed profound grief over the disaster.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, Keyamo sympathised with the families of the deceased and pledged Federal Government support for recovery efforts.

“This tragic event has left an indelible mark on the community, and we are committed to providing the resources needed for rebuilding lives and properties,” Keyamo stated.

The Minister praised the courage of emergency responders, whose prompt actions saved lives and minimised further destruction.

He assured that the Federal Government would collaborate with the state to ensure adequate relief and long-term recovery measures.

Residents of Agbor are now calling for stricter regulations on heavy-duty vehicles in urban areas to prevent future tragedies.

Meanwhile, the community continues to mourn as families bury their loved ones and begin the painful process of rebuilding their lives.
