TUEDAY’S SUCCESSFUL democratic transition in Ghana has reinforced West Africa’s potential for democratic and productive governance, according to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking during the inauguration of Ghana’s new President, John Dramani Mahama, in Accra, Tinubu reaffirmed the stronger need for regional unity to tackle critical issues such as poverty, youth unemployment, insurgency, and instability.
Addressing an audience that included dignitaries and regional leaders, President Tinubu stressed the importance of collaboration among West African nations.
He also noted that Ghana’s peaceful political transition is a testament to the region’s democratic maturity and its ability to chart paths of progress.
“This moment does not merely symbolise another milestone in Ghanaian democratic society,” Tinubu said.
“It further demonstrates that in West Africa, we are capable of democratic and productive endeavours.”
He stressed the need for leaders to harness their capacities to uplift their nations from poverty and build resilient economies.
The Nigerian leader emphasised that critics of Africa often ignore the strides made by countries like Ghana and Nigeria.
“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We have the capacity. We shall find the critical path to our success.
“We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people,” he added.
Tinubu also celebrated Ghana’s historical role as the “Black Star of Africa,” highlighting its legacy of freedom and unity.
He urged leaders to prioritise peaceful dialogue and unity, warning against external forces seeking to sow discord.
He expressed confidence in President Mahama’s administration, describing him as a leader with a patriotic vision and a commitment to Ghana’s progress.
Nigeria’s President also anticipated closer collaboration between Nigeria and Ghana under Mahama’s leadership, aimed at strengthening ties and creating better opportunities for citizens of both nations.
“Your new president is a man of patriotic vision and substance. He loves his nation and its people to the core. He believes that your nation has a mission and intends for you all to fulfill it. No one can ask more of a leader than that,” Tinubu remarked.
Reflecting on shared histories, Tinubu noted the deep bond between Ghana and Nigeria, inspired by the founding fathers of both nations.
He called on both countries to honour this legacy and continue fostering partnerships that benefit the region.
With Mahama at the helm, Tinubu expressed optimism for a future filled with hope and progress for Ghana and its neighbours.
