AIMING TO enhance the quality of professional training in Nigerian universities, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has upgraded several medical-related programmes from Bachelor’s degrees to doctoral status.

The NUC says this move is part of a broader effort to align with global educational standards for health professionals.

The commission explained that the upgrade is designed to incorporate advanced clinical training, improve foundational knowledge, and address specialised areas comprehensively.

A statement issued by Franca Chukwuonwo, NUC’s Acting Director of Public Affairs, emphasised the need for expanded practical sessions and enhanced clinical skill-building to ensure graduates meet international benchmarks.

As part of this transition, she noted that the affected programmes will now run for six years instead of the previous five.

She also explained that the additional year will accommodate the expanded curriculum, which includes more clinical training and advanced courses in line with the NUC’s Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) and Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS).

Programmes receiving the upgrade include the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT), and Doctor of Optometry (OD).

These changes reflect a commitment to producing highly skilled professionals capable of competing globally and addressing Nigeria’s healthcare needs effectively.
