THE UNITED States Embassy in Nigeria has explained that its recent changes to visa policies for Nigerians are aimed at enhancing security and service delivery, rather than punishing applicants.
According to US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, the measures are part of a global review of US visa operations.
The new policy reduces the validity period and entry allowance for most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens.
Ambassador Mills stated that the US values its strong relationship with Nigeria and welcomes Nigerians for various purposes, including study, business, and family reunions.
However, he emphasized the importance of complying with US visa laws and regulations. “Visa compliance is a cornerstone of mutual trust and respect between our two nations,” Mills said.

He warned that overstaying or providing false information could result in deportation or a lifetime ban on future travel to the US.
The US Embassy will now conduct more rigorous background checks, including access to Nigerian criminal records, to close security gaps. Minister of Information and National Orientation,
Mohammed Idris, refuted claims of discrimination in the new visa process, describing Nigerians as frequent travelers to the US.
Idris emphasized the need for accessible information on visa processes and reiterated that the ministry will work with the US mission to ensure transparency and public education on consular issues.
Both the US Ambassador and the Minister called for increased awareness and compliance among Nigerian citizens.
