One of the youngest player in the tournament fast becoming a dangerous super substitute, 17 year old Ibrahim Mbaye who plays for PSG of Paris got a set piece telegram from Sadio Mane in the 77th minute which he made a good finishing of.
Senegal awaits the winner of the Mali versus Tanzania round of 16 match coming up shortly. That quarterfinal against Mali/Tunisia winner comes up on 9th January in Tangier.
It is wonderful to inform you that Sudan made history as the first country to qualify for the round of 16 games in 35 years edition of AFCON without scoring a goal. The only goal to saw Sudan in this round was an OWN GOAL by Equatorial Guinea at the group stages as Sudan lost 0-2 to Burkina Faso and 0-3 to Algeria.
Senegal got to the Round of 16 stage beating Cheetahs of Benin 3-0; drew 1-1 with DR Congo and also drubbed Botswana 3-0.
Both countries met seven times before now with Senegal winning four matches and obtaining three draws so the Falcons of Sudan never defeated Lions of Senegal and the biggest win was Senegal 3 Sudan 0 at an AFCON match of 13th October 2018.
Sudan, ranked 117 in the world is in their 10th appearances at AFCON finals and has been an old warrior team of African football that shined when many African teams were in embryo bagging the Bronze at the very first AFCON edition in 1957; got Bronze again in 1959and then got the Silver at Ghana in 1963 but fizzled out into oblivion from the Podium finish of AFCON after the country won the Gold in 1970.
The Teranga Lions of Senegal ranked 19 is in their 18th appearances and got their only title at Cameroon 2021. Senegal finished 4th position twice in 1965 and 2006.
Later tonight at 8.00pm, the Eagles of Mali engage the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in an all Eagles duel which we cannot tell you whether it will be aerial battle fought in the skies or land combat where the peaks will be used to pluck out each other’s feathers.
Tomorrow Sunday at 5.00pm hosts Morocco will be trying to bring down the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in the march to win the trophy while at 8.00pm the finals before the finals will be Bafana Bafana of South Africa versus Indomitable Lions of Cameroon which promises to be a very tough duel.
