CHALLENGES FACING Nigeria’s economy and insecurity, particularly those associated with elections, will feature prominently at the seventh yearly lecture of Freedom Online in Lagos on September 3.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the lecture will examine how Nigeria can tackle insecurity and conduct the 2027 general elections in a manner acceptable to all, with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, former Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, and former Ogun State Governor, Senator Gbenga Daniel, among the key speakers.
In a statement issued by Freedom Online Managing Director and Editor in Chief, Gabriel Akinadewo, he said the platform deliberately choose to focus on insecurity because it had become a serious threat to the Nigerian state.
He said the lecture would also examine questions surrounding Nigeria’s future after the 2027 elections, including how the election would be conducted, whether its outcome would provide a solid foundation for the country’s future and the roles of politicians, security agents and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“We believe that actions of politicians, security agents and INEC officials, before, during and after the election will, one way or the other, decide the fate of the more than 200 million Nigerians in this geographical space,” Akinadewo said.
He said insecurity, including thuggery during elections, contributed to poverty, underdevelopment and other social vices.
“Nigeria’s political, economic and social fabric is disintegrating because of this time bomb and the outcome of the election will go a long way to decide Nigeria’s future in global affairs,” he said.
Akinadewo also said Sanwo-Olu would serve as the Special Guest Speaker at the event, while Lai Mohammed would chair the lecture and Daniel would attend as a o-Special Guest of Honour.
In addition, he said the President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) who is also Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, Eze Anaba, will serve as Chief Host.
Akinadewo reiterated that the lecture is expected to focus on challenges facing the economy and insecurity, especially issues associated with elections in a developing economy such as Nigeria.
