FROM JULY 8th to 12th, Africa will take a decisive step in confronting its air pollution crisis as it hosts the CLEAN-Air Forum in Lagos.

The event, organized by AirQo from Makerere University and co-hosted by the University of Lagos and Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), aims to address the continent’s pressing air quality challenges.

Air pollution, claiming approximately 1.1 million lives annually in Africa according to global studies, stands as the continent’s second leading cause of death, exacerbated by rapid urbanization and industrial growth.

Despite these daunting statistics, many African cities lack the resources and infrastructure needed to effectively combat this pervasive issue.

The CLEAN-Air Forum seeks to foster collaboration among policymakers, scientists, civil society representatives, and industry leaders from across Africa and beyond.

It will feature discussions on evidence-based policy development, the health impacts of air pollution, and strategies to enhance awareness and action.

Key stakeholders, including environmental agencies and research institutions, will unite to explore sustainable solutions that promise healthier futures for African communities.

As the continent grapples with these critical challenges, the CLEAN-Air Forum 2024 represents a pivotal moment for Africa to consolidate efforts and forge a path towards cleaner, healthier environments continent-wide.

It’s a good initiative. Trucks blasting the air with fumes from their diesel engine exhaust should be seriously considered please.
