AI-Generated Content Raises Concerns Over Election-Related Polarisation

IN OUR previous tracking, social media influencers and supporters of candidates and political parties were identified as the main creators of synthetic AI content, especially images used to promote, discuss and attack.

Our current tracking significantly shows that social media platforms have different ways of rewarding creators from an engagement perspective. Across the dominant social media platforms in Nigeria, our tracking shows dominant consumption of confirmed AI-generated synthetic images and videos, with consumers viewing and liking more than commenting on the issues or personalities portrayed in the content.

These patterns are more evident in confirmed AI-generated synthetic content than in content classified as AI-assisted.

Looking at the patterns in the insights, our analysts found that creators have succeeded in shaping people’s views and polarising them along ethnic, political and religious lines rather than promoting national unity as the elections draw closer.

Our analysts note that social media platform owners need to diffuse the virality of confirmed AI-generated synthetic images and videos to avert possible election violence that could occur before, during and after the elections.
