CALLS FOR stronger safeguards against artificial intelligence (AI) generated political misinformation, electoral security threats and weak institutional accountability have emerged ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with stakeholders warning that the risks could erode public confidence in the electoral process.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the concerns were raised during a virtual stakeholder meeting convened on Monday, October 12, 2026, by the Centre for Research on Development of African Media, Governance and Society (CEREDEMS Africa), in partnership with the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and the Institute of Geopolitical Communications at RUDN University, Russia.
The meeting reviewed findings from the September 2026 Electoral Intelligence Report, bringing together academics, media practitioners and electoral stakeholders to examine challenges surrounding information integrity, electoral justice, security and inclusive democratic participation.

Participants stressed the need to strengthen measures against emerging electoral risks, particularly the spread of AI-generated political content, alongside concerns about security and institutional accountability.
They warned that failure to address these challenges could weaken public trust in the electoral process as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
Their discussions also examined the importance of electoral justice and inclusive democratic participation, placing information integrity and security among the issues requiring attention ahead of the polls.
Organizers note that the meeting formed part of their stakeholder engagement around the findings of the September report and the challenges facing Nigeria’s electoral process before the next general elections.
