NIGERIA’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has secured a prestigious role on the Preparatory Committee for the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in 2025, as announced by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

The appointment was confirmed via a formal letter from Martin Chungong, the General Secretary of the IPU, addressed to the Senate President

Akpabio’s nomination, celebrated in the letter, includes an invitation to attend the committee’s inaugural meeting scheduled for May 16-17, 2024 at the IPU headquarters in Geneva.

The World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, convened every five years since 2000, aims to strengthen the parliamentary aspect of the United Nations and to address democratic gaps in international relations.

The composition of the Preparatory Committee for the 2025 Conference received endorsement during the 148th IPU Assembly, following consultations with member parliaments and geopolitical groups.

With this, Akpabio is said to be joining a distinguished cohort of parliamentary leaders from around the world on this committee, including prominent figures from various regions.

The committee’s agenda underscores the importance of fostering international dialogue and cooperation among parliamentarians to address pressing global challenges and advance democratic principles on a global scale.

Akpabio’s inclusion in this influential committee not only reflects Nigeria’s growing prominence in the international parliamentary arena, but it also presents an opportunity for substantive contributions to reshaping the agenda of the upcoming World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, the statement affirms.
