THE ALL Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has rejected allegations that the Nigerian Government is plotting to assassinate former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, urging the accuser to provide evidence and warning politicians against statements capable of heightening political tension.
JKNewsMedia.com he council’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, described the allegation by Timi Frank, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as grave and called on security agencies to invite him to substantiate his claim.
Alake also urged Frank to provide any information in his possession to support an investigation, stressing that credible threats to life must be taken seriously regardless of political affiliation.
Alake categorically denied any involvement by President Bola Tinubu or the APC Campaign Council (ACC) in an alleged plot to assassinate Atiku or any opposition figure.
He also dismissed claims that security personnel attached to the former vice president had been withdrawn, insisting that police and Department of State Services personnel continued to protect him.
According to Alake, President Tinubu recently directed security agencies to reinforce and increase protection for presidential, vice-presidential, governorship and deputy governorship candidates across the country.
He added that Atiku, as a former vice-president and presidential candidate, enjoys two levels of state-funded security protection.
Alake maintained that Tinubu had increased security arrangements for the ADC presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Defending the president’s democratic credentials, Alake said Tinubu recognised opposition politics as an essential part of Nigeria’s 27-year-old democracy. He also noted that Tinubu had spent 16 years as a prominent opposition figure and helped galvanise opposition forces that defeated the Peoples Democratic Party as the governing party in 2015.
Alake accused Frank of engaging in political rabble-rousing intended to heat up the polity. He also criticised what he described as a pattern among opposition figures of publishing open letters and tagging foreign leaders and international organisations in social media posts to attract attention.
He warned that politicians and their supporters might make exaggerated statements and frivolous allegations as the country moves deeper into the campaign season.
The APC campaign council spokesperson urged candidates, political parties and supporters to make factual and responsible public statements and avoid comments that could trigger unnecessary tension.
He called for peaceful and lawful political competition focused on issues affecting Nigerians rather than character attacks and what he described as baseless allegations.
Alake issued the statement on 20 October 2026 in his capacity as spokesperson for the APC Presidential Campaign Council.
