THE FAMILY of the late Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the defunct National Concord Newspapers, Dr Doyin Abiola, has confirmed that her burial will take place from 9 to 12 September in Lagos.

According to the family’s statement, further information on the arrangements will be released in due course.

Colleagues from the defunct Concord Newspapers, communicating via their WhatsApp platform, have moved to set aside a specific day to pay a condolence visit to the family of the late Chief MKO Abiola in honour of Dr Abiola’s memory.

The group noted that, on that day, only messages relevant to her life and career will be shared, allowing members to collectively reflect on her contributions to Nigerian journalism.

The planned visit, they stated, would also provide an opportunity to obtain updated details about the funeral, which will then be shared with all members of the platform.

Dr Doyin Abiola, who passed away in July, was Nigeria’s first female newspaper Editor-in-Chief and a trailblazer in the country’s media industry.

She served as Managing Director of the National Concord, playing a pivotal role in shaping the newspaper’s editorial direction and influencing national discourse during her tenure.

Her death marked the end of a distinguished career that spanned decades and broke significant barriers for women in the newsroom.

Her legacy as a pioneering journalist and media executive is also described as one that would continue to inspire both contemporaries and younger generations in the profession.

Since last Tuesday, August 5, tributes have poured in from across the media landscape, with former colleagues, public figures, and industry bodies acknowledging her leadership, editorial excellence, and commitment to press freedom.

The family also emphasised that the burial ceremonies in Lagos would be an opportunity for colleagues, friends, and admirers to celebrate her life and achievements, as well as to honour her impact on journalism in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, more updates on the programme of events are expected in the coming weeks.
