PLANS HAVE been concluded for the final burial of veteran journalist and Publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Samson Oladipo, with his family fixing September 10 and 11, 2026 for the funeral in Lagos.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that Kazeem Akintunde, a close friend and associate of Oladipo, announced the dates early Thursday morning in the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), WhatsApp group.
“Good morning, dear colleagues. Dotun’s family has decided that his burial will take place in Lagos on September 10th and 11th,” Akintunde wrote.
Oladipo died suddenly on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56, sending shockwaves through Nigeria’s media industry, where he was widely regarded as a pioneer of digital journalism.
He served as President of GOCOP from 2017 to 2021 and was formerly Political Editor of The PUNCH. During his career, Oladipo helped shape online news reporting, regulation and professional standards in Nigeria.
President Bola Tinubu, Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu and media organisations across the country have paid tribute to the late journalist.
Lagos, where the burial will take place, was also the city where Oladipo built The Eagle Online into one of Nigeria’s most credible digital news platforms.
The family has not yet released full details of the funeral activities.
However, the two-day burial programme is expected to include a service of songs, commendation and interment, with colleagues and dignitaries expected to attend.
Media stakeholders have begun making plans to pay their last respects, with members of GOCOP, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), and the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), preparing to honour the late publisher.
Colleagues have also renewed calls for support for Oladipo’s legacy, noting that he left behind three daughters still in school and a media business he worked hard to sustain.
Information notes that the final rites taking place in Lagos on September 10 and 11, 2026, will bring colleagues, media stakeholders and notable dignitaries together to bid farewell to the journalist and honour his contributions to online publishing, among others.
