CONERNS OVER poor infrastructure quality have spurred the Delta State Government into action.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has intensified road inspections, issuing stern warnings to contractors and site engineers over substandard work.
During his inspection of the 6.5km Achalla-Ibusa Road, the Governor criticised the contractor for poor drainage construction.
He emphasised that shoddy projects would not be tolerated under his administration.
Contractors delivering subpar work will face sanctions, while complicit engineers risk penalties.
Governor Oborevwori revealed that his visit followed unsatisfactory reports from inspectors previously sent to evaluate the project.
Determined to enforce accountability, he announced plans to personally inspect road projects across Delta State’s 25 local government areas.
“This year, inspections are key,” he said. “We will not pay for substandard work. Any contractor failing to meet expectations will face contract revocation. Even if paid, site engineers will bear responsibility for lapses.”
The Governor also inspected the recently completed 2km road to the 63 Brigade Barracks in Aboh-Ogwashi, commending the contractor’s timely delivery.
Other projects included the Okpanam-Ibusa gully erosion site and the ongoing access road construction for the Asaba waterfront city.
The waterfront city project, a Public Private Partnership (PPP), involves constructing a six-lane access road while developers reclaim and develop the land.
Governor Oborevwori disclosed that 20% of the project had been completed, with compensation already paid to property owners along the right-of-way.
In rural development efforts, the Governor visited the 4.5km Oko-Amakom to Oko-Obiakpu road, built one metre above the 2012 flood level.
He noted the road’s vital role during floods and pledged its completion by mid-year.
Asaba’s Marine Road Off Cable Point Road also received attention.
This road facilitates the movement of goods across the River Niger, making it critical for local trade.
Governor Oborevwori assured residents that ongoing cleanup efforts in Asaba would lead to significant improvements.
Further inspections covered projects like Leo Okonweze and Odozi-Obodo streets in Asaba. Contractors were urged to expedite work to meet deadlines.
Governor Oborevwori reiterated his administration’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure that provides real value to Deltans.
“We aim to complete and commission significant projects this year,” he said. “Deltans will witness visible progress in roads, health, and education by our administration’s second year.”
