EFFORTS TO combat climate change have highlighted the need for collaboration between nations.
At the 2025 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu joined the global discourse, showcasing his commitment to addressing climate imperatives and advancing sustainable development.
President Tinubu, speaking on the second day of the event, unveiled Nigeria’s strategies to transition from carbon-heavy practices to a green economy.
His address, titled “From Climate Imperatives into Economic Prosperity: Bridging Africa with the Global Energy Future”, emphasised the urgency of global interconnectedness and collective action.
“The fight against climate change is not merely an environmental necessity but a global economic opportunity,” President Tinubu said.
He stressed that leaders and stakeholders must collaborate, innovate, and act decisively to secure a sustainable future for all.
Climate Goals and Energy Transition
President Tinubu outlined three pillars guiding Nigeria’s approach: energy transition, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
He reassured participants that his administration prioritises reducing carbon emissions while aligning with international climate goals.
The president noted that Nigeria is diversifying its energy sources, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, and advancing the adoption of cleaner energy.
He cited the country’s growing investments in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure, electric vehicles, and renewable energy sources as examples of this commitment.
“We have embraced a vision of sustainability that aligns with global aspirations while addressing local realities. Our energy transition plans serve as a cornerstone for national development,” he added.
Local Solutions for Global Impact
To tackle environmental challenges such as deforestation, desertification, flooding, and pollution, Nigeria is engaging local communities in climate-smart agricultural practices.
These measures aim to ensure food security while mitigating environmental damage.
The president highlighted the National Clean Cooking Policy, designed to promote clean energy solutions, reduce health risks, and drive socio-economic development.
He also announced Nigeria’s ongoing Sovereign Green Bond initiative, making it the first African nation to fund green projects through such instruments.
“These investments are capital intensive and require international support,” President Tinubu remarked, urging partners, multinational organisations, and private investors to contribute resources.
Call for Global Collaboration
President Tinubu appealed to the global community to support Africa’s green economy transition.
He praised the United Arab Emirates for hosting the event and fostering discussions on sustainable development.
“By partnering with global leaders and leveraging technology, we can address environmental challenges while creating opportunities for prosperity.
Nigeria has the potential to lead Africa in sustainable practices, supported by its vast agricultural resources and technological capabilities,” he stated.
World leaders at the event also explored actionable steps to strengthen climate partnerships, ensuring that no region is left behind in the transition to a sustainable global energy future.
