AFTER A lengthy legal battle, two notorious drug traffickers, Uwaezuoke Ikenna Christian and Agbo Chidike Prince, have been sentenced to life imprisonment, marking a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Uwaezuoke Ikenna Christian, a 43-year-old businessman, had his journey to a lifetime behind bars initiated when he was first apprehended by NDLEA operatives on March 19, 2022, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Upon inspection, he was found to have ingested a staggering 100 wraps of cocaine, weighing approximately 2.243 kilograms.

Despite pleading not guilty and being granted bail initially, he fled, prompting the court to revoke his bail and issue an arrest warrant.

In a surprising turn of events, Uwaezuoke was apprehended again on August 1, 2023, at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos.

This time, he attempted to smuggle 1.822 kilograms of cocaine to India under a different identity.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was initially sentenced to seven years in prison or a fine of ₦1,500,000.00.

However, facing additional charges in Abuja, he was re-arraigned and ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment on March 20, 2024, by Justice Joyce Obehi Abdulmalik, due to his lack of remorse and repeated offenses.

Similarly, 42-year-old Agbo Chidike Prince was arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on October 21, 2023, with 49 wraps of cocaine weighing 998.73 grams. Despite pleading guilty and attempts at mitigation, he was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment on April 15, 2024, by the same judge, emphasizing the severity of drug-related crimes.

In another operation, NDLEA officers at Lagos airport thwarted an attempt to export 4,000 pills of tramadol to Italy. The suspect, Yahaya Danjuma Oturah, confessed to being hired as a courier for €700 upon successful delivery.

Additionally, in Bayelsa, NDLEA operatives arrested 28-year-old Jennifer Iliya for producing and distributing cakes laced with drugs, along with accomplices involved in similar offenses.

The agency has also been successful in intercepting large quantities of illicit substances across various states. Notable among these are the arrests of suspects with pentazocine injection and cannabis in Kaduna, Adamawa, Kano, and Edo states.

The NDLEA continues its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign, conducting sensitization lectures across schools and communities nationwide. Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd), Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, commended the diligent prosecution efforts and emphasized that there is no escape for those involved in drug trafficking.

He also lauded the efforts of NDLEA commands across the country for their vigilance and commitment to combating drug-related crimes.
