FAAN and NSA to Streamline Airport Security Checks

THE Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) have unveiled plans to streamline physical security checks at airports in response to complaints from travelers regarding delays caused by multiple checks.

In a recent statement to journalists, FAAN’s Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, it was noted the both agencies have agreed on short and long-term measures to tackle the issue.

One of the key initiatives will involve the establishment of a joint coordination room where various agencies can conduct necessary checks by monitoring CCTV cameras.

Kuku emphasized that addressing the challenge of multiple security checkpoints was a top priority upon assuming office. She disclosed productive discussions with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, aimed at devising effective solutions to the problem.

Regarding the baggage checks, Kuku expressed her longstanding her concern and highlighted previous efforts to address the issue dating back to her tenure in 2011 and 2012, pointing out the involvement of multiple agencies such as customs, NDLEA, Quarantine, and Agriculture at airports, acknowledging the complexity of the situation.

Kuku also mentioned past initiatives like Executive Order 001 during the Buhari administration and the establishment of the National Single Window to streamline operations.

Outlining the outcomes of discussions with security agencies, Kuku outlined short-term interventions to reduces the number of agencies present at airports, additionally, she proposed a long-term solution to involving the joint coordination room where agencies can utilize CCTV surveillance for monitoring. This approach aims to enhance efficiency while maintaining security standards.

Kuku also underscored the collaborative efforts between FAAN and NSA to improve airport security procedures, ultimately ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers.
