SINCE AUGUST 19, when we commenced our #TrackingNaija2027Elections initiative, information integrity has remained a key focus of the tracking.
Our review of fact-checking organisations in Nigeria and across other African countries shows sustained efforts to sanitise the information ecosystem around the elections, using established fact-checking principles and strategies.
The aggregation of political claims from stakeholders and their supporters also points to a substantial volume of fabricated and manipulated information targeting institutions and individuals ahead of the elections. According to our analysts, this outcome aligns with recent conversations from the electoral body on the role of information disorder in affecting the elections.
Against this backdrop, our analysts urge fact-checking organisations to sustain their efforts to sanitise the information ecosystem. Citizens, particularly potential voters, are also encouraged to take cognisance of fact-checking verdicts on political claims and consider them in assessing candidates, political parties and the claims they make.
