THE TRANQUIL village of Uwala Abaka in Ukehe, Igboetiti Local Government Area, Enugu State, was shrouded in sorrow as families, friends and residents gathered to bid farewell to their cherished son, actor John Odonwodo, affectionately known as Junior Pope.

The solemn burial rites commenced at 10:00 am with a commendation mass at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish, Ukehe, followed by a lying-in-state at his father’s compound.

Here, family members, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers paid their final respects before the body was moved to a private venue for interment at approximately 1:30 pm.

The grief-stricken community, including the late actor’s wife, children and other family members, were deeply moved by the overwhelming turnout.

Junior Pope’s wife, Jennifer Awele, was inconsolable, her tears reflecting the profound loss felt by those who knew and loved him.

The late actor’s first son, attempting to console his mother, also succumbed to his grief, highlighting the emotional toll of the day.

The 43-year-old actor’s demise, deemed untimely on April 10, due to a tragic boat accident in the Anam River, Anambra State, left a void in the hearts of many.

Junior Pope and four others perished when their boat capsized while returning from a movie shoot.

The atmosphere at the burial ceremony was somber as mourners, including colleagues from the entertainment industry, gathered to honor his memory.

Despite the significant presence, some notable figures from the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) were visibly absent, raising questions among attendees.

Veteran actress Rita Edochie expressed her heartbreak upon learning of Junior Pope’s death, recalling his contributions to Nigerian cinema and the joy he brought to audiences.

Former President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Nnia Nwodo, also attended the funeral, underscoring the actor’s impact on his community and beyond, adding that Junior Pope’s funeral service was a poignant tribute to a life dedicated to art and family, with the community of Uwala Abaka uniting in their collective grief and remembrance.
