THE FEDERAL Government has officially adopted Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University.

This transition is noted to mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, particularly in the advancement of teacher training and educational excellence.

TASUED, founded by the Ogun State Government in 2005, now holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education.

Also named after Dr Tai Solarin, a renowned educationist and social reformer, the university has played a pivotal role in teacher education and professional development.

With its well-established academic and infrastructural framework, the federal transition is described as a measure that will require minimal additional investment.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the adoption on Friday, acknowledging the Ogun State Government’s invitation for federal intervention.

The move also aligns with the administration’s commitment to strengthening teacher education and improving national education standards.

“This transition is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to advancing education and leadership training,” President Tinubu stated.

He also recognised the efforts of the Awujale of Ijebuland, whose intervention in 2012 prevented TASUED from closure.

With this development, TASUED becomes the first federally owned university in Ogun East Senatorial District, a statement noted.

The institution joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education, Owerri, and Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo, bringing the total number of federal universities of education to three.

Ogun Govt Welcomes Move

Meanwhile, Ogun State Government has welcomed the transition, praising the FG’s decision as a transformative step for the institution.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, in a statement issued by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to TASUED’s continued growth and excellence.

He emphasised that federal adoption would enhance funding, infrastructure, and academic expansion, further solidifying Ogun State’s status as an educational hub in Nigeria.

He said the FG’s broader agenda includes the expansion of universities of education to elevate teacher training and human capital development.

Adding that TASUED’s transition is part of this vision, ensuring the production of highly skilled educators to drive educational reforms nationwide. Governor Abiodun said the addition of the institution brings the total number of newly adopted universities of education to seven in recent years.

Other institutions that have received similar federal status include the Federal University of Education, Kano; Federal University of Education, Zaria; Federal University of Education, Pankshin; Federal University of Education, Kontagora; Adeyemi University of Education, Ondo; and Alvan Ikoku University of Education, Owerri, the statement noted.
