THE KATSINA State Government, on the prompting of the Federal Government, has signalled its intent to take charge of a federal wind power facility and expand its capacity with solar energy, marking a bold push to reshape the state’s energy landscape.
Governor Dikko Umar Radda revealed the plan during a strategic dialogue with the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, on Tuesday.
The high-level engagement, focused on strengthening federal-state collaboration, set the tone for what could be a transformative partnership aimed at accelerating energy access and sustainability in the region.
At the heart of the discussion was the 10-megawatt wind farm located in Katsina. Originally constructed by the Federal Government, the plant has stood as a modest but underutilised asset in the state’s energy infrastructure.
Katsina, in collaboration with energy firm Genesis Energy, now intends to take over its operations and integrate additional solar power, creating a hybrid facility capable of delivering more reliable electricity to residents.
Governor Radda presented the hybridisation proposal as part of his administration’s broader commitment to tackling electricity shortfalls and unlocking new economic opportunities through improved energy supply. His approach drew strong support from the Minister of Power, who praised the initiative as visionary and aligned with national policy reforms.
Adelabu highlighted that the move corresponds with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, which decentralises power development and empowers state governments to lead energy projects within their jurisdictions.
He also linked the initiative to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ensuring equitable power access and fostering economic resilience across Nigeria.
Pledging full cooperation, the Minister assured that the Federal Government would support Katsina in securing a smooth concession of the wind farm and provide technical backing for its planned solar integration.
The partnership, he noted, offers a model for other states seeking to leverage local resources to drive energy innovation and self-sufficiency.
With plans now in motion, Katsina’s leadership aims to deliver a sustainable power solution that not only brightens homes but powers development across the state.
