NIGERIA’s PLANS to overhaul the administration of football have received backing from world football governing body FIFA, National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman, Shehu Dikko, has disclosed, following the recent resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)’s top leadership.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that Dikko’s disclosure marks a new development in the ongoing restructuring of Nigerian football, with the country now set to pursue changes to the way the sport is administered after the departure of the NFF leadership.
The NSC Chairman said FIFA’s endorsement followed discussions on Nigeria’s proposed reform programme and the circumstances that led to the collective resignation of the NFF leadership.
He noted that the development means the proposed restructuring of Nigerian football has received support from the sport’s global governing body, providing a framework for the next stage of the process.
Also, the resignation of the entire NFF board and the General Secretary created the need for a new administrative arrangement for the federation, he added.
With the previous leadership no longer in place, he said attention has shifted towards establishing a process capable of managing football administration while the broader reforms are undertaken.
Dikko said the reform programme is intended to comprehensively address the administration of football in Nigeria rather than focus solely on replacing the officials who have resigned.
The development is expected to lead to consultations and further decisions on the structure, responsibilities and administration of the NFF as the reform process progresses.
FIFA’s endorsement also places the international football governing body directly within the reform process, with Nigeria’s proposed changes now proceeding with its support.
