GOODS WORTH at millions of naira were destroyed after a one storey commercial building housing computer and accessories dealers was razed on Somoye Osundairo Street in Computer Village, Ikeja, Lagos.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the incident was reported at about 1:55 a.m. on Tuesday through the 767 and 112 toll free emergency lines, triggering the immediate activation of the state emergency response plan from its Command-and-Control Centre in Alausa.
The agency said its response team arrived at the scene around 2:15am and found the building engulfed in flames, with dense smoke indicating intense combustion within the structure.
In a preliminary incident report signed by the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Olufemi Oke Osanyintolu, the agency said the building was used for the storage and sale of computers and accessories, adding that the high volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
“Responders observed active flames and dense smoke, indicating intense combustion within the structure. The high volume of combustible materials contributed to the rapid spread of fire,” the statement said.
LASEMA also said the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained and was under investigation.
On casualties, the agency confirmed that no fatalities were recorded.
It also said one Lagos State firefighter sustained minor injuries during the operation and received first aid treatment on site from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The agency said the entire upper floor of the building was completely razed, with all goods and properties stored there destroyed.
It added that the structure was partially compromised and would require immediate assessment.
LASEMA said its team conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the area and coordinated a multi-agency response involving the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LASFRS), LASAMBUS and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), adding that firefighting operations successfully contained the fire and damping down was ongoing to prevent re ignition.
