NIGERIA’s FIRST Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged a nationwide commitment to ending plastic pollution, spotlighting youth as key drivers of environmental change.
Marking this year’s World Environment Day under the global theme “Ending Plastic Pollution,” she called for urgent, united efforts to combat what she described as one of the world’s most pressing environmental crises—an issue impacting public health, natural ecosystems, and generational futures.
“Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time,” Senator Tinubu stated in an official address, calling for Nigerians to change consumption patterns and rethink how they handle plastic packaging, containers, and bags.
She emphasised that reversing the tide of plastic waste begins with responsible habits and collective vigilance.
Addressing the nation’s youth directly, the First Lady described them as stewards of tomorrow’s environment and challenged them to become active participants in building a cleaner Nigeria.
Whether in classrooms or neighbourhoods, she stressed, young people can play pivotal roles in fostering environmentally conscious communities.
Senator Tinubu’s statement comes amid increasing global concern over plastic pollution’s impact on marine life, soil quality, and urban drainage systems, especially in densely populated countries like Nigeria.
She said her call aligns with international efforts encouraging nations to eliminate single-use plastics and embrace sustainable alternatives.
She also added fresh appeals with momentum to ongoing awareness campaigns and signals a growing push for grassroots engagement in Nigeria’s environmental protection movement.
