DOCTORS HAVE given the family of the veteran Dutch tactician, former Super Eagles Coach, Clemens Westerhof, devastating news, with his wife, Lillian, appealing for prayers and support as he battles the illness in hospital.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that his wife, Lillian, confirmed the diagnosis in an Instagram post on Saturday, saying the family was devastated by the news as the veteran football coach clings to life.
Westerhof is receiving treatment at Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem, his hometown in the Netherlands, after he was rushed there on Wednesday, Vanguard reported.
Lillian said doctors had informed the family of the diagnosis and disclosed that Westerhof could be transferred to a specialist facility in Amsterdam or Germany for better treatment.
“The doctor just told us he has colon cancer and we are all devastated,” she said.
“He is in a critical condition and emotional, talking about our two daughters.
“He wants to live. We need help. We need prayers.”
Westerhof has also battled Alzheimer’s disease for years and previously suffered a severe fall that resulted in a dislocated waist in 2022.
The Dutch tactician coached Nigeria’s Super Eagles from 1989 to 1994 and earned recognition for transforming the national team during his tenure.
He guided Nigeria to victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and secured the country’s first qualification for the FIFA World Cup in the same year.
Under his leadership, Nigeria climbed to fifth in the FIFA rankings, the country’s highest-ever position and an African record that still stands.
