THE RISING global challenges of hunger and poverty took center stage at the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as President Bola Tinubu endorsed the newly launched Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

Championed by Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the alliance promises collaborative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Tinubu lauded the initiative, calling it a milestone in addressing structural causes of poverty.

He emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to adopt international best practices, integrating them with domestic strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

He stressed that eradicating hunger (SDG 2) and poverty (SDG 1) remain central to Nigeria’s development agenda.

Nigeria’s commitment includes leveraging global partnerships for innovative solutions, financial support, and inclusive reforms.

Tinubu also renewed calls for United Nations Security Council reform, urging the allocation of two permanent African seats to reflect global diversity.

The President highlighted Nigeria’s leadership in championing tax equity through a proposed UN framework convention, aiming to address revenue imbalances affecting developing countries.

By supporting these reforms, Nigeria reaffirms its role in bridging the gap between the Global North and South while advancing the SDG 2030 targets, he reiterates.
