THREE GOALS, two contrasting performances and a night that quickly turned from a difficult qualifying assignment into one of Nigeria’s heaviest setbacks against an African opponent have left the Super Eagles facing a demanding route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that Nigeria’s route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has become considerably more difficult after Guinea Bissau inflicted a 3 0 defeat on the Super Eagles, leaving the three-time African champions three points behind the Group L leaders after only two matches.
What began as a qualifying campaign with a comeback victory over Madagascar has quickly developed into a fight for survival in a group where only one qualifying place is available beyond co-host Tanzania.
Guinea Bissau took full advantage of Nigeria’s defensive vulnerabilities at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro, scoring once in the first half and twice after the interval to record their second victory of the campaign.
Franculino Djú opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Mama Baldé doubled the advantage in the second half. Álvaro Djaló then completed the victory in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
For Eric Chelle, the result brought his unbeaten competitive start as Nigeria coach to an end. For the Super Eagles, it was more than just a defeat in the group standings. It was their heaviest loss in AFCON qualifying history.
A Qualification Race Suddenly Tightens
Nigeria entered the match with three points after recovering from a goal down to defeat Madagascar 2 1 in Uyo on September 25.
That result had given the Super Eagles an encouraging start. George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored as Nigeria turned the match around and secured the points.
Four days later, the picture changed dramatically.
Guinea Bissau now lead Group L with six points from two matches after following their opening 2 0 victory over Tanzania with another win. Nigeria remain on three points, while Madagascar have yet to register a point.
The unusual structure of the group makes Nigeria’s position even more significant.
Tanzania are already guaranteed a place at the 2027 finals because they are one of the three co hosts, alongside Kenya and Uganda. Their participation is therefore assured regardless of their qualifying results.
That leaves Nigeria, Guinea Bissau and Madagascar competing for the group’s only remaining qualifying place.
Every remaining match consequently carries greater weight for the Super Eagles.
Nigeria have four matches left, but they must now recover from a three goal defeat against the team sitting directly above them. Guinea Bissau also hold the head to head advantage, meaning the reverse fixture will carry additional significance.
The margin for error has narrowed sharply.
Nigeria Lose Control Of The Match
The decisive moment came early. Renato Nhaga picked out Djú, who cut inside before curling a left footed shot into the bottom corner beyond Stanley Nwabali.
Nigeria had an opportunity to respond almost immediately when Alex Iwobi released Ademola Lookman, but Fernando Embadjé saved the forward’s effort.
The Super Eagles could not build on that opening.
Onyeka later hit the side netting, but Nigeria struggled to turn their possession into clear opportunities. Guinea Bissau remained comfortable enough to defend their lead while waiting for opportunities to attack the space behind the Nigerian midfield and defence.
The second half did little to change the pattern.
Chelle attempted to inject more attacking energy by bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon at half time. George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika followed in the 75th minute.
The changes, however, failed to produce a goal.
Instead, Guinea Bissau struck again.
Baldé received Mamadi Camará’s pass in the 66th minute, beat Bright Osayi Samuel and drove a low shot beyond Nwabali.
Nigeria then had another opportunity to reduce the deficit when Ilenikhena tested Embadjé in the 85th minute, but the goalkeeper made the save.
The hosts had the final say.
A quick counter attack in stoppage time allowed Djaló to finish and make the score 3 0, sealing Guinea Bissau’s biggest ever victory over Nigeria.
Three Goals, One Recurring Problem
The manner of the goals exposed a concern Nigeria had already shown in their previous match.
All three Guinea Bissau goals came from counter attacking situations, with Nigeria caught high up the pitch.
That vulnerability had also appeared during the Madagascar match. Nigeria survived those moments partly because Nwabali produced important saves, but Guinea Bissau were more ruthless when similar opportunities presented themselves.
The result has therefore created a tactical question for Chelle.
The Nigerian coach must decide how much risk his side can continue to take with a high defensive line, particularly when opponents have the pace to attack the space left behind the midfield and defence.
Against Guinea Bissau, those spaces repeatedly became an invitation.
The hosts were able to move quickly when Nigeria lost possession, and the Super Eagles struggled to recover their defensive shape quickly enough.
Nigeria’s attacking problems compounded the issue. Possession did not translate into enough clear chances, while Guinea Bissau made their opportunities count.
The contrast ultimately produced the three goal margin.
The Pitch Adds Another Layer
The playing surface also became an important part of the discussion surrounding the defeat.
Nigeria’s players appeared reluctant to commit fully to some challenges and duels, while the difficult condition of the pitch made it harder for the Super Eagles to establish the rhythm required to control the game.
The concerns were particularly notable because Nigeria had previously seen Ola Aina suffer a long term injury when South Africa played them on a poor pitch.
Aina had been in the squad and started against Madagascar, but he did not feature in Bissau.
The condition of the surface provided an additional challenge, but it did not explain the entire performance.
Nigeria still had opportunities to compete, particularly after conceding the opening goal, yet the team could not generate enough attacking pressure to change the direction of the match.
The defeat has therefore renewed concerns about the standard of pitches being approved for international matches while also placing greater responsibility on the players and coaching staff to adapt to difficult conditions.
A Night To Forget For Nwabali
The performance also put the spotlight on Nwabali.
The goalkeeper had started the campaign as an important figure for Nigeria and had produced key saves during the opening victory over Madagascar.
Against Guinea Bissau, however, he endured a difficult night.
He could not keep out Djú’s curling effort for the opening goal and was again beaten when Djaló completed the scoring in stoppage time.
The responsibility did not rest solely with the goalkeeper. Nigeria’s defensive structure allowed Guinea Bissau to create the situations that produced the goals.
Nevertheless, the performance is likely to reopen competition for the position, with Maduka Okoye and Arthur Okonkwo among the other goalkeeping options available to Chelle.
The issue will now form part of the wider assessment required after a result that exposed problems across the team.
A Defeat That Carries Historical Weight
The scale of the result is also significant.
Nigeria had suffered heavy defeats against African opponents before, but the Super Eagles had not lost an AFCON qualifying match by three goals.
Their previous three goal defeat to an African opponent in a competitive match came at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations, when Algeria defeated them 5 1 in Algiers.
Madjer scored twice in that match, Menad also claimed two goals and Amani completed the scoring. Okocha scored Nigeria’s only goal in the 82nd minute.
Before that, Zambia had beaten Nigeria 3 0 in 1982.
Guinea Bissau have now produced another three goal defeat, but this time in a qualifying campaign in which Nigeria have little room for further setbacks.
The hosts did not simply benefit from isolated mistakes. They repeatedly exploited Nigeria’s weaknesses, defended against an inconsistent attack and used their pace effectively when opportunities appeared.
That combination allowed them to turn an early lead into a comprehensive victory.
Chelle’s First Major Test
The defeat represents Chelle’s first competitive loss since taking charge of Nigeria.
His side had begun the qualifying campaign by defeating Madagascar, but the performance in Bissau exposed areas that must now be addressed before the remaining fixtures.
The coach has four matches in which to change the direction of the campaign.
Nigeria will need to improve their defensive organisation, particularly against counter attacks, while finding greater consistency in attack.
The goalkeeping situation will also require consideration after Nwabali’s difficult outing.
There is little time for the Super Eagles to dwell on the result because the structure of Group L leaves them with a narrow path to the finals.
Guinea Bissau have already established a three point lead and possess the head to head advantage. Madagascar remain without a point but still have four matches in which to alter the standings.
Nigeria therefore cannot rely solely on the fortunes of their rivals.
The Super Eagles must produce results themselves.
The Road Ahead
The 3 0 defeat has transformed the atmosphere around Nigeria’s qualifying campaign.
A victory over Madagascar had suggested that the Super Eagles could build momentum. The defeat in Bissau has instead exposed defensive weaknesses, raised questions about the team’s response to difficult conditions and placed renewed scrutiny on individual performances.
More importantly, the mathematics of the group have become unforgiving.
With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the finals as a co host, Nigeria are effectively competing with Guinea Bissau and Madagascar for one remaining ticket.
Guinea Bissau have made the strongest start, taking six points from six. Nigeria have three, while Madagascar remain without a point.
The Super Eagles now have four matches in which to close the gap.
The task begins with recovering the confidence lost in Bissau, but the problems exposed by the defeat will require more than a change in the result.
Nigeria must find a way to prevent opponents from exploiting the space behind their defence, create more from their possession and respond better when difficult conditions make their usual approach harder to execute.
Tuesday’s defeat was therefore not simply a three goal loss.
It was a warning about the demands facing Nigeria in a qualifying group where there is only one available route to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations beyond the guaranteed place reserved for co host Tanzania.
The Super Eagles still have four matches to change the story, but Guinea Bissau have already ensured that Nigeria will have to work significantly harder to reach the finals, analysts say.
