…Gulp Debutante Scorchers of Malawi 3-0 in the finals
FORMER THREE times WAFCON Silver Medalists, Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon refused the shocking waves of debutante Scorchers of Malawi in the grand finale of the 14th tournament played at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat consuming their challengers 3-0 all scored before the break.
They are new African women’s champions!!!
Cameroon proved absolute superiority over the Malawians that shocked many big teams on their way to the finals. Star girl was 23 year old Galatassary women’s team where Nigerian star, Victor Osimhen plays for and the lady is Marie Ngah whose lone strike opened scoring in the 20th minute and who made her brace in the match closing goals sheet in the 45+3 minute, the 3rd goal in the match for Cameroon and her 5th goal in the tournament to equal highest scorers Ines Konan of Ivory Coast, Temwa Chawinga of Malawi who shot blank today and Barbra Banda of Zambia. The Golden Boot for Highest scorer will be given to the player with the highest assist among the four players.
Naomi Etoo scored the 2nd goal from a floater released by defender Maryiam Nyadjou in the 30th minute. Naomi who will be 22 years on September 22 we can reveal is not a relation of the Cameroonian FA President, legendary Samuel Etoo. Naomi was born in Yaounde. Cameroon got a 4th goal through Gabrielle Onguene who came in fir star girl Marie Ngah and just three minutes scored in the 94th minute but Egyptian Ref Sahanda Ali ruled there was a foul play and flashed Gabrielle a yellow card which was one of the 3 yellow cards all to Cameroon.
Malawi had come into the game rather late with a far better 2nd half but Cameroon was determined to lift the trophy for the first time to ensure they erase a complete historical record the Malawians would have made. Apart from all teams regarded as debutants in 1998 when WAFCON was reformatted, the only team that wangled its way to the final as debutante is Malawi. Now any other nation to beat that record has to reach the final and win the trophy. Kudos to Malawi.
Cameroon finished them up with 14-9 shots at goal, 6-3 on target, stringing 289-286 passes in 50-50% ball possessions and 6-3 corner kicks advantage. Malawi hit the wood work once. The Cameroonians played their usual physical football, get an unbelievable 17-12 foul calls because the Egyptian Ref wanted flowing football but she showed Cameroon 3 yellows within 10 minutes to the end of the game when Malawi pressed hard to get goals.
And now a new African champions have emerged in the Lionesses of Cameroon ranked 71 in the world, who were runners up in 2004, 2014 and 2016. Only yesterday Fennecs of Algeria claimed the Bronze defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 via penalty shootouts after 1-1 of 90 minutes of football.
Four teams namely new African champions Cameroon, Malawi, Algeria and Morocco have automatic ticket to the next women’s world cup in Brazil but Ghana and South Africa that won the CAF play-off matches will play inter Confederation Playoffs and will be in Brazil if they win.
