THE INDEPENDENT National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a review of suspicious photographs flagged in its preliminary register of voters after concerns emerged on social media over images suspected to have been generated by artificial intelligence.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the commission said the online register published on 26 October 2026 contained the same preliminary records displayed physically at Registration Areas nationwide from 9 to 15 October as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.
INEC also acknowledged that its officials identified and flagged questionable registration records during the physical display, prompting a review and corrective measures in line with established procedures.
Mohammed Kudu Haruna, chairman of the commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee, issued the clarification on Tuesday, 27 October 2026, stressing that the online publication did not incorporate all ongoing data cleaning activities.
He explained that the preliminary register was not the final certified document, noting that the display exercise allowed citizens to scrutinise their details, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and seek corrections before certification.

The commission also said it was also investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses. It pledged to take appropriate action based on verified findings.
It also said it welcomed the vigilance of citizens and stakeholders who raised concerns about the images, saying public scrutiny would help improve the accuracy and integrity of the voters’ register.
JKNewsMedia.com also reports that the commission said it would complete the necessary verification, adjudication and data cleaning processes before certifying the final Register of Voters on 15 December 2026.
It further assured Nigerians that officials would address verified irregularities through the applicable procedures and provide further updates as the review progresses.
