LATEST FIGURES released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) have shown that internet subscriptions in the country rose by 2.67 million in May, with Globacom recording the highest growth among the country’s major telecommunications operators.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the NCC says that national internet subscriber base increased from about 154.3 million in April to approximately 157 million in May, while Globacom’s subscriber base rose from about 15.5 million to 16.8 million.
The operator also added about 1.2 million internet subscribers during the month, accounting for nearly half of the increase recorded nationwide, the NCC noted.
Airtel Nigeria recorded the second highest growth, adding about 1.07 million subscribers to reach 55.8 million in May, compared with 54.8 million in April, the NCC statistics showed.
MTN Nigeria gained 382,894 subscribers, raising its internet subscriber base from about 83.1 million to approximately 83.5 million.
T2 Mobile, formerly known as 9mobile, recorded no growth for the second consecutive month, maintaining an Internet subscriber base of 802,534 despite its national roaming agreement with MTN Nigeria.
Industry sources attributed Globacom’s performance to its ongoing nationwide infrastructure renewal and expansion programme, which began last year.
The project involves deploying thousands of new base stations to extend network coverage to new locations and increase capacity in densely populated areas, with the aim of delivering superior voice and data services across the country.
Globacom is also expanding its fibre optic network and relocating infrastructure in areas affected by major road construction projects.
The company noted it has deployed thousands of 4G LTE sites across strategic cities and communities this year, improving connectivity, expanding network reach and enhancing service quality for customers in both urban and rural locations.
It also said that the latest subscriber figures emphasise the growing demand for Internet services in Nigeria and increasing competition among mobile network operators.
NCC sites that Globacom’s performance in May reflects the positive impact of its sustained investment in network infrastructure and its commitment to providing customers with reliable, high-quality data and voice services nationwide.
