WOMEN’s HEALTH featured prominently in advocacy programmes held last week in Abuja and Lagos, focusing on cancer awareness, reproductive wellness, and preventive care, the organisers stated.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Women Affairs Secretariat, in partnership with Julius Berger Nigeria PLC and the Family Peace and Women Empowerment Initiative (FAPWEI), hosted the 2025 Women’s Health and Advocacy Programme in Abuja, the organisers confirmed.

The initiative centred on early detection and management of breast and cervical cancer, bringing together healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community representatives for sensitisation sessions.

Dr. Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, FCT Mandate Secretary for Women Affairs, described the programme as an example of how corporate organisations can strengthen communities.

She highlighted the role of private sector contributions in advancing women’s health and aligning with national development agendas, the Secretariat noted.

Mrs. Shakira Mustapha, Chief Risk Officer of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC, reiterated the company’s commitment to community development, stating that the initiative celebrated women’s resilience while promoting awareness of mental health and preventive care.

James Agama, Head of Corporate Development, added that the collaboration reflected the company’s vision of enabling progress and prosperity.

The Abuja event included donations of 400 bags of rice to beneficiaries, reinforcing the company’s dedication to social investment and sustainable partnerships, the organisers said.

Two days later, the outreach extended to Lagos with a women’s health programme at Gbagada General Hospital. Hundreds of women from Kosofe Local Government Area attended sessions themed “Woman’s Reproductive Journey and the Importance of Wellness through Self-awareness and Self-preservation.”

Topics included menopause, pregnancy care, self-care practices, and free medical check-ups, according to the hospital.

Healthcare experts at the Lagos programme, including Dr. Olutokunbo Oseni and Dr. Noimot Balogun, emphasised early detection and lifestyle awareness, noting the role of preventive care.

Julius Berger also highlighted ongoing collaborations with Gbagada General Hospital, including rehabilitation work on the Intensive Care Unit, the company stated.

Mrs. Mustapha underlined the importance of empowering women in community development, quoting her statement: “When you train a woman, you have trained a nation,” the organisers reported.

She framed the initiative as part of a broader approach that integrates infrastructure projects with social investment.

Community members at both locations engaged in the sessions, learning about health management and preventive care.

Councillor Christiana Kuboye noted the company’s contributions extended beyond construction to meaningful social impact, according to the report.

The Master of Ceremony at the Lagos event, physiotherapist Lanre Elegbeleye, reminded participants of Julius Berger’s longstanding reputation for excellence, stating that none of their bridges had ever collapsed and that the company stands for responsibility, courage, and collaboration, the organisers added.

According to the press release, these programmes demonstrate that corporate social responsibility for Julius Berger Nigeria PLC encompasses more than construction work.

By combining health advocacy, educational sessions, and donations with infrastructure projects, the company aims to strengthen communities and support women’s wellness across the country.

The Abuja and Lagos initiatives focused on raising awareness of both physical and mental health, with sessions on preventive care, early detection of illnesses, and reproductive health education.

Organisers noted that the events gathered participants from multiple backgrounds, including healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community representatives, for structured learning and interactive engagements.

The initiatives also included distribution of essential items in Abuja and facilitation of free medical services in Lagos.

According to the release, these measures are part of Julius Berger’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility and its broader philosophy of integrating infrastructure development with community empowerment.

The press release highlighted that such programmes align with the company’s broader vision of national development, addressing health education, resource provision, and awareness campaigns.

Both events provided platforms for participants to access expert knowledge, medical screenings, and community support networks.

From Abuja to Lagos, the 2025 Women’s Health and Advocacy Programs reinforced the company’s strategy of complementing its engineering projects with social investment.

Organisers stressed that empowering women and promoting health awareness are central elements of the CSR initiatives, with tangible benefits for communities involved.

Community representatives and local leaders engaged in discussions, noting the programmes’ impact on public health awareness.

The company’s statement confirmed that the activities helped participants gain information on managing health conditions, improving self-care practices, and understanding reproductive health, the release indicated.

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc says it continues to expand its CSR footprint, ensuring that health advocacy, preventive care, and community education are integrated with its construction and development projects.
