COMMITMENT TO safer roads remains the central focus as the Federal Road Safety Corps reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, applauding the company’s exceptional engineering standards and consistent support for national traffic safety initiatives.
During a courtesy visit to the company’s Abuja office, FCT Sector Commander of the FRSC, Felix N. Theman, led the Corps Management Board to strengthen ties with the construction giant.
He acknowledged a cordial working relationship built over nearly three decades, referencing firsthand experiences from his 28-year career within the Corps and frequent collaborations on major national infrastructure.
“No nation can progress without the necessary infrastructure to support its economy,” Theman stated, emphasising the economic value of high-quality roads. “Julius Berger has distinguished itself through the quality of its work and the high standards it has maintained over the years.”
Theman stressed the human element of road usage, noting that while the company constructs reliable roads, users must exercise caution and discipline.
“The roads are built for human use. Until vehicles drive themselves, it is people who operate them. Character, discipline, and patience are essential. We must ensure the beautiful roads built do not become sites of accidents,” he said, adding that the FRSC remains focused on enforcement, public education, and advocacy.
He recalled previous instances of Julius Berger’s material support to the Corps, including donations of traffic cones and reflective jackets, which, he noted, were instrumental in aiding the agency’s field operations.
Responding on behalf of the company, Director of Administration, Alh. Dr Abdulaziz Isa Kaita, affirmed Julius Berger’s commitment to road safety and collaboration with the FRSC.
“We view ourselves as partners in progress. We are proud of the roads we’ve built in Abuja over the past 30 years. Recently, we were honoured by the American Society of Civil Engineers as the Best Construction Company in Nigeria,” he said.
Highlighting innovation in Julius Berger’s engineering approach, Kaita referenced the Cold Recycling Technology deployed on the Abuja-Kano Expressway, which has earned international recognition.
He added that the company has implemented truck weight and speed-limiting devices, defensive driving courses, and annual driver certification exercises to enhance safety.
“At all times and in all circumstances, we are ready to work with the FRSC,” Kaita said. “Collaboration is a core value for us. We remain open to partnerships with organisations that prioritise the wellbeing of Nigerians.”
Speaking further, Julius Berger’s Corporate Health, Safety and Environment Manager, Peter Drillingcourt, described the company’s collaboration with the FRSC in managing road crash sites as effective.
He said the company continually invests in driver training, accident-free bonuses, and routine medical evaluations to ensure safety and productivity.
Accompanying Commander Theman on the visit were Deputy Corps Commander II Nzapisma, Superintendent Route Commanders JS Aina and Adedeji Adesoye, and Assistant Route Commander CC Igbo.
Kaita led the Julius Berger team, which included HSE Manager Drillingcourt, Assistant HSE Manager Trust Ekaji, and Media Relations Officers Olivia Uzoma and Emmanuel Isibor.
