THE FEDERAL Government (FG) announced it has strengthened public health surveillance and response measures following the confirmation of an Ebola disease case in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), urging Nigerians to remain calm, practise good hygiene and rely only on verified health information.
JKNewsMedia.com reports that the government said it is working with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and other relevant health authorities, is taking steps to contain the risk and protect public health following the confirmed case.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant without panicking, stressing the importance of recognising possible symptoms, reporting suspected exposure promptly and following official public health guidance.
Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person who is sick or has died, as well as contaminated materials. According to the public health advisory, the virus does not spread before symptoms begin, the NCDC statement said.

The FG also discloses that symptoms of ebola in a person’s system may include fever, severe weakness, headache, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Anyone who suspects exposure is also advised to promptly contact public health authorities for guidance, even if they feel well.
For those those who develop symptoms after possible exposure, government said they should avoid close contact with others and seek medical guidance before visiting a healthcare facility.
FG’s advisory also urges people contacted during contact tracing, including relevant airline passengers, to provide the necessary information and comply with public health instructions.
On a larger note, Nigerians have further been advised to maintain regular hand hygiene, avoid contact with the body fluids of anyone suspected of having ebola, and refrain from spreading unverified information or stigmatising affected individuals.
Also the FG has reiterated the importance of public cooperation, assuring Nigerians that relevant health authorities are working to strengthen surveillance and protect healthcare workers, patients and the wider public. Investigations are ongoing, with further updates expected through official channels.
Meanwhile, the NCDC advises that for enquiries or to report a suspected case, members of the public can contact the NCDC toll-free call centre on 6232, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Reiterating on safety of citizens, the FG urged Nigerians to remain calm, follow official health guidance and share only verified information as public health authorities continue their response.
