RENOWN AND multi-specialist R-Jolad Hospital Nigeria Limited, Gbagada, faces a lawsuit seeking over N800 million from a Lagos-based architect, Alfred Ogene, who alleges gross medical negligence left him with permanent urinary damage and severe physical, emotional, and economic distress.
Mr. Ogene filed the claim through his lawyers, requesting compensation for pain and suffering, loss of earnings, loss of enjoyment of life, psychological trauma, and a refund of medical expenses.
Court documents also show he was admitted to R-Jolad Hospital on November 15, 2025, for management of partial paralysis following a stroke that affected his right limbs.
However, he had no prior urinary dysfunction, the claim states, adding that a urinary catheter was inserted due to his limited mobility, but complications allegedly arose within 24 hours.
Mr. Ogene reportedly experienced abnormal urine leakage and intense groin pain after a catheter change by one Nurse Elizabeth.
But his complaints were allegedly dismissed, with staff assuring him the pain was normal. Sadly, his condition reportedly worsened, causing abdominal swelling and acute distress, requiring emergency intervention.
The lawsuit also claims the hospital breached its duty of care by incorrectly inserting and managing the catheter, ignoring warning signs, delaying medical intervention, and only performing emergency procedures after serious injury occurred.
An independent consultant urologist confirmed the injuries were consistent with catheter-related trauma, according to the claim.
Mr. Ogene, with over 40 years’ experience as a consultant architect, says he suffers permanent urinary impairment, psychological trauma, loss of marital intimacy, inability to earn income, and inability to undergo physiotherapy essential for stroke recovery.
The claim seeks N500 million for negligent treatment, N100 million for mental and psychological trauma, N200 million for loss of enjoyment of life, and N10 million monthly from December 2025 to 2042 as loss of earnings, and a refund of hospital bills and legal costs.
Alternative Dispute Resolution has also been proposed, with full litigation warned if engagement fails.
R-Jolad Hospital, through its Customer Service Officer (CSO), Ayomide Olayiwola, confirmed awareness of the complaint and said it had been escalated for internal investigation.
The hospital said it could not comment on specific allegations due to patient confidentiality but noted all complaints undergo clinical audits, internal reviews, and management oversight under its quality assurance and clinical governance standards.
