A NEW bill aimed at harmonising all geographic information service projects in Lagos is currently under consideration at the State House of Assembly.

The Lagos Geographic Information Service bill seeks to establish a computerised central database for all geospatial information and related issues.

Stakeholders gathered on Friday to contribute to the bill, which outlines the agency’s responsibilities in Section 4(2).

These include introducing, implementing, and sustaining best practices for all Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the state, and developing an online platform to contain all geospatial-related information and statistics.

Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, highlighted the bill’s potential to enhance governance and boost professionalism in the state.

Represented by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Obasa stated, “It is targeted at integrating governance with advancements in technology. This is something we hope to always take advantage of so that our state can continue to be ahead in the area of development.”

He emphasized that the Assembly’s focus remains on serving the residents of Lagos.

Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, reported that the Chairman of the House Committee on Physical Planning and Urban Development, Hon. Ogunkelu Sylvester, praised the bill for demonstrating the legislators’ commitment to the interests of the people.

“Today’s public hearing means a lot to the improvement of information technology and computerised central database in Lagos State,” Ogunkelu remarked.

Representing Epe Constituency 2, Ogunkelu elaborated on the bill’s benefits, stating it will provide a comprehensive database for Lagos, allowing residents to apply for property certificates online without needing to visit the Ministry.

This system aims to reduce fraudulent land sales by including detailed information and photographs of property owners.

Former lawmaker Rasheed Makinde commended the House for its proactive approach. Meanwhile, stakeholders suggested that professional bodies be involved in the proposed legislation to ensure its effectiveness and comprehensive coverage.
