Lagos Flooding Submerges Major Roads And Disrupts Movement After Heavy Downpour

SEVERAL PARTS of Lagos State were severely affected by flooding on Wednesday following the all-day heavy rainfall that submerged streets and disrupted movement across the city.

Residents reported difficulties leaving their homes and navigating major routes as floodwaters blocked traffic and rendered vehicles immobile in affected areas.

Videos shared online showed waterlogged roads forcing cars and motorcycles to wade through the flood, slowing traffic and trapping commuters.

Along Ago Palace Way, including Apple Junction and Ago Bridge, as well as Mile 2, residents documented scenes of vehicles struggling through flooded streets.

One user on X, identified as JustOzed, posted, “Earlier today, September 23rd, 2025, after a heavy downpour, parts of Lagos, including Ago Palace Way (Apple Junction, Ago Bridge) and Mile 2, were flooded. I captured these scenes to show the reality we face every rainy season.”

The video posted online showed floodwaters covering roadside gutters and spilling onto the carriageway, creating gridlock. Reports also confirmed the disruption caused by the rising water.

Commentary from residents pointed to both government responsibility and community actions as key to addressing recurring flooding. JustOzed added, “The Lagos State Government has been working – clearing drains, expanding canals, and opening new water channels – but government efforts alone are not enough.

“We, the people, must do our part: stop dumping refuse in gutters, keep drainage paths free of blockage, obey urban planning rules.

“If we all cooperate, flooding can be drastically reduced. Let’s protect our city and make Lagos a true Centre of Excellence.”

Social media users expressed divided opinions on the causes of the persistent flooding.

An X user identified as Gandalf54670444 attributed the situation to government shortcomings, writing, “Stop this foolishness. 90% of the prob is govt failure.

Rainfall volume has dropped, yet flood levels are up. No proper refuse collection infrastructure. No proper clearing of water channels.

Indiscriminate sandfilling & reclamation by the government, the list is endless. Fashola did 10x better.”

Another user, iam_olakunle1, disagreed, insisting that improper waste disposal remains the main challenge.

The user stated that residents dumping refuse indiscriminately into drains directly contributed to the blockage of water channels, worsening the flooding problem.

The incident comes despite ongoing measures by the Lagos State Government to improve drainage systems, expand existing water channels, and maintain clear waterways.

These efforts have continued in recent years to mitigate the impact of heavy rainfall on the state’s infrastructure.

Residents have continued to urge for stronger public awareness campaigns and greater cooperation between citizens and government agencies.

They also stressed that curbing flooding requires adherence to urban planning regulations, responsible waste disposal, and consistent infrastructural maintenance to safeguard lives and property during the rainy season.
