IN LAGOS, lawmakers announce they are advancing a bill to establish the State Research Trust Fund to boost scientific and technological development.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, has referred the legislation to a subcommittee for further refinement.

Sponsored by Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu, the bill has passed its second reading and aims to create a dedicated research fund for effective resource allocation and management.

Legislators supporting the initiative commended its potential to enhance innovation, economic growth, and industrialisation.

Yishawu stressed that Lagos, as Nigeria’s economic hub, must not lag in scientific progress. He highlighted the necessity of structured research funding to drive governance improvements and technological breakthroughs.

While some lawmakers raised concerns over the taxation aspect of the bill, they ultimately acknowledged its significance.

Hon. Noheem Adams reinforced the importance of research funding, citing historical technological advancements.

“When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, no one imagined a day when we would all carry mobile phones in our pockets,” he remarked.

The ad-hoc committee is expected to refine the bill ahead of its final passage, ensuring that Lagos remains at the forefront of scientific and economic innovation.
