SEQUEL to yesterday’s catastrophic fire incident that engulfed sections of Lagos Island, including the bustling Dosumu section of Idumota market yesterday, Tuesday, the Lagos State Government has swiftly enacted measures to mitigate further damage and ensure public safety.

Contained in a directive from Mrs. Bola Olumegbo Lawal, Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Central Business Distress, commercial operations at Dosumu Street and its surrounding areas have been temporarily halted.

The decision comes in the aftermath of a harrowing blaze believed to have been ignited by a running generator explosion.

Eyewitnesses recount scenes of chaos on television as flames engulfed building and smoke billowed into the sky, prompting a rapid response from emergency services.

Mrs. Lawal, leading a delegation to the site for a firsthand assessment, emphasized the imperative of prioritizing human life and averting potential casualties, urging for cooperation from market traders and residents to facilitate the efforts of emergency responders.

She notes that the impact of the fire extends beyond Dosumu Street, affecting neighbouring markets such as Nnamdi Azikwe, Moshalashi, and others, underlining the severity of the situation and the need for comprehensive safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the near future.

Ibrahim Farinloye, Sonal Coordinate of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the South-West, provided insights into ongoing rescue and firefighting operations, noting that despite challenges posed by the intensity of the flames, efforts are underway to contain the blaze and minimize its repercussions.

He said as the extent of the damage remains uncertain, concerns mount over the economic ramifications for traders and the broader community, and adds that the closure of key markets disrupts livelihood and hinges on the vulnerability of urban areas to such disasters.

Farinloye said this latest incident serves as a stark reminder of the pressing need for proactive measures to enhance fire safety and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban centres like Lagos.

He also disclosed that the Lagos government is urging other stakeholders to collaborate in implementing robust strategies to mitigate the risk of future calamities and safeguard the lives and livelihoods of residents.
