HIGH-LEVEL talks on digital innovation culminated in a landmark agreement to establish the Nigerian AI Scaling Hub in a move set to boost technological advancement across healthcare, agriculture, and education.
Wednesday, the Federal Government, represented by the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, hosted Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Gates Foundation, and a senior delegation in Abuja for a critical dialogue on Nigeria’s digital future.
Discussions drew momentum from earlier engagements between Dr. Bosun Tijani and Mr. Gates, where artificial intelligence emerged as a central theme among African innovators.
With connectivity and AI as top priorities, the signing of the agreement marked a pivotal step towards scaling digital solutions in sectors with immediate social impact.
Under the agreement, the Gates Foundation committed up to $7.5 million in funding and technical expertise to establish the AI Scaling Hub.
This initiative is designed to accelerate the development of localised, AI-powered interventions capable of addressing national challenges and enhancing service delivery.
Describing the development as both personal and national, Dr. Tijani noted, “This is a significant milestone for us. We are not just adopting technology; we are shaping it to serve our people, address real challenges, and unlock Nigeria’s full potential under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”
He also said the Gates Foundation’s investment reflects growing international confidence in Nigeria’s innovation landscape.
It further affirms the Tinubu-Shettima administration’s commitment to building a resilient, digitally inclusive economy driven by homegrown solutions and local talent, the statement adds.
Tijani said Nigeria will continue to strengthen its position as a digital leader in Africa through strategic partnerships and forward-looking policies focused on innovation and equitable access.
