THE MEDICAL evacuation of the Ebola patient and her husband to Switzerland has left Nigeria with no active case of the disease, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi.

JKNewsMedia.com reports that Janabi disclosed this in a statement on his official X handle on Monday, confirming that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the patient, while Switzerland would take responsibility for her continued treatment and follow-up of her husband, identified as contact number 53.

The evacuation took place earlier on Monday, with both individuals identified as Swiss citizens.

Janabi said the patient was clinically stable after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition.

He congratulated the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN), health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the response, describing the development as a remarkable achievement.

The WHO regional director said the successful management of the patient demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries worked together to address health emergencies.

However, he stressed that vigilance remained critical, urging continued monitoring of contacts and other response measures.

JKNewsMedia.com also reports that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, had earlier on Monday, confirmed that the patient had departed Abuja for Switzerland for further treatment.

Pate said the woman had clinically improved and was stable, conscious and communicating, while her laboratory results were moving towards normal levels.

He added that her husband remained asymptomatic.

Precisely on 20 October 2026, Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case in more than a decade after laboratory tests detected the Bundibugyo virus in the woman, who had recently travelled to Nigeria from Uganda.
