FOURTEENTH SPORTS Fiesta of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Ltd will hold this weekend at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, marking a week-long series of competitions designed to showcase employee athleticism and select potential flagbearers for the upcoming Nigeria Oil & Gas Industry Games (NOGIG) in February 2026.

The event, themed “Energy In Motion: Compete, Connect & Celebrate,” will feature 450 athletes representing NNPC Ltd’s six zones.

The tournament will run from Sunday, November 30, 2025, to Saturday, December 6, 2025. Organisers stated the fiesta reflects the company’s emphasis on physical well-being as a contributor to organisational productivity.

Teams competing under the company’s core values include Team Integrity, comprising Port Harcourt and Benin zones; Team Excellence, representing Lagos and Warri; and Team Sustainability, covering Abuja and Kaduna.

Participants will compete in 13 sports, including football, basketball, volleyball, chess, squash, scrabble, 8-ball pool, golf, tennis, table tennis, badminton, swimming and athletics.

NNPC Ltd highlighted that the fiesta also serves as a platform for selecting athletes to represent the company at the 20th NOGIG, where it will defend its title as overall winner.

According to the company, NNPC Ltd has historically dominated the NOGIG Games, outperforming other participants from International Oil Companies (IOCs) and agencies under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

During the last NOGIG edition in 2024, held at the same venue, NNPC Ltd secured 50 laurels, including 20 gold, 9 silver and 21 bronze medals, achieving the tournament’s overall victory.

Organisers said the upcoming 14th Sports Fiesta will continue to build on this legacy, reinforcing the company’s position in national oil and gas sporting competitions.

Chief Corporate Communications Officer Andrew Odeh stated that the event reflects the company’s commitment to fostering teamwork, skill development and competitive spirit among employees.

He confirmed that the week-long tournament would combine both recreational and professional sporting standards to identify top-performing athletes for national representation.

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium will host matches and competitions across all disciplines, with schedules arranged to accommodate simultaneous events in team and individual sports.

The announcement says football and basketball matches will attract heightened attention due to their high level of competition among zonal teams.

NNPC Ltd said the Sports Fiesta is part of its wider strategy to promote employee engagement and wellness while maintaining a strong competitive presence in the Nigeria Oil & Gas Industry Games.

The company also highlighted that its dominance in NOGIG reflects both the talent and dedication of its workforce across its zonal divisions.

Officials stated that athletes participating in the 14th Sports Fiesta will gain experience, exposure and the opportunity to represent the company at the national level.

NNPC Ltd described the selection of flagbearers as critical to maintaining its overall winning streak in the NOGIG Games, with the upcoming February tournament offering a platform for renewed achievement.

The biennial NOGIG Games bring together employees from IOCs and key agencies under the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

NNPC Ltd noted that consistent victories in these competitions reflect the company’s investment in employee development and structured sporting programmes.

According to the organisers, the 14th Sports Fiesta underscores the company’s belief in connecting physical well-being with professional excellence.

The thematic focus of “Energy In Motion: Compete, Connect & Celebrate” signals a commitment to promoting camaraderie, competitive spirit and holistic wellness across its workforce.

Athletes representing each zone are expected to compete fiercely, with performance across all 13 sports determining selection for the national-level games.

NNPC Ltd noted that the competitions will be held under regulatory compliance and standardised sporting rules to ensure fair play and the integrity of results.

Officials said logistical arrangements include designated venues for each sport, scheduled match timings, and adjudication by certified referees and officials.

Organisers stated that the event will also facilitate internal team-building and promote cross-zone collaboration, contributing to the company’s broader corporate objectives.

The company highlighted that the Sports Fiesta’s one-week duration is designed to allow comprehensive participation across disciplines, ensuring every athlete has the opportunity to compete and demonstrate skill.

Teams representing NNPC Ltd’s six zones will engage in round-robin matches in team sports and bracket-style or timed competitions in individual sports.

NNPC Ltd confirmed that athletes’ performances during the 14th Sports Fiesta would directly inform selections for the 20th NOGIG Games in February 2026.

Officials said that careful evaluation of results and sporting conduct will guide nominations for company flagbearers.

The company emphasised that the biennial nature of both the Sports Fiesta and the NOGIG Games ensures continuity in athletic development and reinforces NNPC Ltd’s status as a leading participant in national oil and gas sports competitions.

The 14th Sports Fiesta, organisers said, reflects the company’s ongoing investment in employee wellness, competitive excellence and strategic engagement in national sporting events.
