NATURAL GAS supply in Nigeria is set for a significant boost as NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML), a subsidiary of NNPC Ltd, and its Unincorporated Joint Venture (UJV) partner, NIPCO Gas Ltd, have finalised a Gas Sale and Purchase Agreement (GSPA) with Ssonic Petroleum Ltd.

The deal will see the supply of natural gas to Ssonic Petroleum’s proposed Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State.

Sealed on Thursday, 6th March 2025, the agreement stipulates that NGML-NIPCO UJV will provide 80 million standard cubic feet (mmscf) of natural gas per day to the Ssonic Petroleum LNG facility.

The long-term contract, set to run for 20 years, is positioned to bolster domestic gas utilisation and support Nigeria’s industrial and economic expansion.

Speaking on the agreement, Olufemi O. Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd, highlighted the initiative’s alignment with national and global sustainability goals.

He emphasised that promoting natural gas as a cleaner and cost-effective alternative energy source remains central to the company’s agenda, particularly in addressing environmental concerns and reducing global warming.

This latest deal reflects NNPC Ltd’s commitment to advancing gas infrastructure and ensuring energy security.

NNPC Ltd said that by fostering collaborations with private sector partners, the company aims to scale up the adoption of natural gas, reduce dependence on costlier fuel options, and enhance industrial productivity across the nation.

It also notes that as Nigeria intensifies efforts to harness its vast natural gas reserves, projects such as the Ssonic Petroleum LNG plant are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s energy future.

The Lekki Free Trade Zone, a hub for industrial investments, is anticipated to benefit significantly from the reliable gas supply, attracting further economic growth and job creation in the region.
