NNPC Takes Legal Crackdown on TikTok Fuel Misinformation Claims

By Jemimah Wellington, JKNewsMedia Reporter

MOUNTING ALARM over misleading fuel marketing and quality misinformation has prompted Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, to initiate robust legal and security measures.

A TikTok video posted by @valorreviews featured a demonstration in which a man employed two small tiger generators to compare the running time of premium motor spirit.

The video alleged that Dangote-refined petrol outperformed and was more affordable than the fuel dispensed at NNPC stations.

During the 60th Nigeria Mining & Geosciences Society Conference in Abuja, Kyari described the claim as “an unfortunate drama and bad marketing practice.”

He asserted that all fuel supplied meets stringent quality standards, maintained under the vigilant oversight of regulatory bodies such as the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Agency (NMDPRA).

Kyari stressed that no official report has indicated the presence of substandard petrol in the market.

Drawing on international comparisons, Kyari noted that while oxygenate is mandated in European premium motor spirit to prevent tank solidification, its introduction in Nigerian vehicles would yield adverse chemical reactions.

He further denied claims of a 200-million-litre fuel importation in February, clarifying that importation remains a routine industry practice worldwide.

Kyari also warned that spreading falsehoods not only undermines NNPC’s credibility but also destabilises the national energy sector.

Thanks Amelia, for this offer. But we are a young business and we are currently in need of finances to stabilize the business too.
