INSPECTOR-GENERAL of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has instructed a thorough reinvestigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Erasmus Emhenya, which occurred on April 10, 2023.

This directive follows a viral video interview on the “Brekete Family” programme where the deceased’s mother detailed challenges faced in obtaining her son’s body.

IGP Egbetokun mandated the Deputy Inspector General of Police and the Force Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a transparent inquiry into the incident at Nyanya Divisional Police Headquarters, Abuja (FCT).

Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that initial findings from an autopsy revealed Emhenya’s death was due to asphyxiation, refuting claims of torture.

Amid public concerns, Adejobi assured the public of the force’s commitment to upholding human rights and professional conduct.

He emphasized disciplinary actions against any officers found engaging in misconduct, underscoring the institution’s dedication to public welfare.

IGP Egbetokun expressed condolences to the Emhenya family and urged for calm pending the investigation’s outcome.

What’s the meaning of asphyxiation please? Can’t suffocation be a result of torture? If the autopsy says the death came by asphyxiation then we can’t quickly conclude that torture is ruled out… Just thinking

Asphyxiation is the state of being deprived of oxygen, leading to unconsciousness or death by suffocation. Yes, your view could actually be right since we are deprived of other facts to draw conclusions. Thank you, again.
